A 55-year-old former neonatologist from Spokane, Washington – Ronald Craig Ilg – will spend up to eight years of his life in prison because he paid $60,000 in Bitcoin to hitmen to kidnap his wife and beat up his ex-colleague. He has admitted to transferring $60,000 in Bitcoin to hitmen on the dark web tasking them to injure an ex-colleague of his. He also tasked the hitmen to kidnap his wife and inject her with heroin so she could drop divorce proceedings.
In spite of the honour code of his profession, Ronald Craig was willing to harm his ex-colleague and he followed up his intent by contacting numerous hitmen on the dark web, asking them to injure or even break the hands of his ex-colleague. He concealed his identity by using the pseudonym “Scar215” with the password “Mufassa$$”.
Ronald Craig initially transferred $2000 worth of Bitcoin to the criminals while assuring them that there would be more tasks in the future if they executed it properly. He also insisted on video evidence once the beating was done and he provided them with the victim’s picture, address and schedule to facilitate the crime.
The victim of his next crime was his estranged wife, who had already filed divorce proceedings against him. He sent almost $60,000 in Bitcoin to the dark web criminals to kidnap and inject her with heroin. He thought that while she was under the influence of the drugs, she would return to their failed marriage and drop their divorce proceedings.
Fortunately, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) detected the plan and got hold of the former doctor’s messages with the hitmen. He was them invited to a voluntary interview with the agency where he falsely claimed that he was suicidal. He also sent a letter to an important witness in the case begging her to marry him so he could control the proceedings.
On his part, Michael Heiler, a top agent at the FBI, assured the public that the FBI won’t stop looking for those crimes and try to prevent them from happening before it’s too late. In a statement, the Department of Justice (DOJ) have announced that they will reveal Ronald Craig’s sentence on 8th November 2022 and he could go to jail for 60 to 90 months.
