It is reported that Oxford City – one of the oldest soccer clubs in the UK will now allow fans to purchase match tickets, food, and beverages using bitcoin instead of fiat currency. This initiative will come through following a multi-year partnership between the team and CoinCorner a digital asset exchange.
In recent years, the soccer industry has had several interactions with the world of crypto. Popular players such as Neymar, Ronaldinho, Andreas Iniesta, and David Beckham have displayed interest in the sector, while, other clubs have also embraced digital currencies as a means of settlement.
According to BBC, Oxford City has collaborated with the crypto platform CoinCorner to become the latest soccer team to accept Bitcoin as an alternative payment method for matchday tickets as well as food and drinks purchases.
This new move is expected to kick start this Saturday when the club faces Eastbourne Borough on its home ground – Court Place Farm. Also, as part of the multi-year agreement with CoinCorner, the name of the stadium will be changed to RAW Charging Stadium, while the company’s logo will be featured on the back of the players’ shirts.
Justin Merritt – Oxford City’s Director of Football – noted that accepting the latest innovations such as bitcoin will be vital for the team to continue operations as a self-sustaining club and also reflects on its long-term strategies.
Merritt stated that “It is not mandatory for the fans to engage the new technology, but believes that in due time making payments via bitcoin will become the new normal in English football.”
