The first cohort of Jack Dorsey and Jay Z’ (Shawn Carters) ‘s Bitcoin education program – The Bitcoin Academy – has come to an end after 12 weeks. The initiative ended this cohort by airdropping $1000 in Bitcoin to all participants of the program who opted to receive a grant.
Business Insider reported that the entire program, including the final airdrop, was funded by both Jay-Z and Jack Dorsey. It is unclear exactly how many people received the $1000 airdrop but an email from Jay’s mother revealed that the program was attended by over 350 residents of Marcy.
The Bitcoin Academy was announced in June as an in-person program for offering Bitcoin education and resources to the residents of Marcy Houses, New York. This location was chosen because this is where Jay Z grew up. The program lasted from 22nd June until 7th September.
At that time, the organizers transparently announce various rewards for participants, including free MiFi devices, one-year data plans, and new smartphones. Other benefits, like the free childcare provided by the program, enticed some Marcy residents to attend. However, the Bitcoin airdrop was a last-minute surprise.
Some of the courses taught at the program included “Wealth Building and Assets,” “Why Decentralization Matters,” “Staying Safe from Scammers,” “Bitcoin & Taxes,” and “Careers in Crypto,” among others. All courses were recorded and are available online – but only for residents of Marcy, New York.
At the end of the program, many of the residents were able to understand complex and technical concepts like Bitcoin mining once they were explained to them in layman’s terms. They were also taught how Bitcoin can be used as a tool for building generational wealth, which resonated with the thought process of many participants.
